Special place for a Skitouring

About 45 minutes of sailing into Nuuk Kangerlua, there is a small bay named Itisoq. This is a place we as guides, but also in our free time often visit, as there’s someting special about the place. Surrounded by three 1100m+ peaks, you will feel like you truly are embraced by the mountains. Here lies several options for an amazing Skitouring!

Coastal Delicacies and Wildlife Sounds

In the bay you will find many delicacies as different fish, mussels, sea urchins and sea weed. Not only in the sea you can find your dinner. Ptarmigans are around you, and sometimes when you’re lying in your sleeping bag, you can hear the ptarmigans call for each other.

Camp Life

The best thing after a skitouring is a camp with different tents. One for you, one big tent for gathering and cooking, a crew tent for guides and gear, and a “super luxurious” sauna tent. The glacier above us is our supplier of fresh water, and you can get to the creek by a 5 min walk. There is no phone reception, nor generator for power, so consider what you bring for six days off in here.

Local guide(s)

You will be guided by local guides. We believe that local guides are the key to unlocking the true essence of a destination. The deep-rooted understanding of the terrain, culture, and hidden gems allow us to curate an unforgettable journey that go beyond the ordinary. They will give you the opportunity to explore the wonders of Greenland, in a way that few have the privilege to do.

Itinerary

Day 1

This day is mostly about getting into the camp, getting settled, and getting a sense of it all.

It all starts with a boat transfer from Nuuk to the camp, which is based about 45 mins away in the fiord.
Here you will settle into your tents in pairs, and get a briefing of the area and how things will run in the camp. A team will head out and place a longline for tomorrow’s dinner, and also fish for tonights dinner.

A short skitouring to get a better orientation of conditions and area, and making a plan for tomorrow’s ski tour. Dinner on the rocks and bonfire for the rest of the day.

Day 2

First real touring day in the backdrop of our camp. Main goal this day is the summit southwest of the camp, with an altitude of 1120 m. Getting further up on this mountain, we will get a great overview of the fiord system, and get a better picture of what’s to come the next couple of days.
When we’re back at the camp, a team will sail out in the bay and haul up the longline and see what’s for dinner. For the fresh ones, you can jump in the sea and take a little break in the sauna until dinner is ready. Again more bonfire socialising.

Day 3

Second day of touring the Itisooq area. After yesterdays experiences, we will decide what to head for as a
group. There’s several options. There is also the opportunity to join one of the guides for a ptarmigan hunt. This can be done either on skis or snowshoes.
At camp a dinner of something local will be prepared – and don’t worry, we won’t make it too local.
There’s always the possibility of exploring the area. Long beautiful rocky beach, views, and the silence.
And you know what’s up in the evening – Bonfire!

Day 4

This day  we have a boat available. After breakfast we will sail to a new skiing location. As we will be based very central in the fiord system, we are looking at a maximum of 45 mins to other areas good for skiing. Main object is north of camp. Less elevation, lower angle, but very
nice and longer run.
Sailing around in the Nuuk fiord is an experience itself, so on our way back, we can detour a bit and see even more.
Back at the camp we’ll prepare what we caught on our way back. Again, the sauna is an option, and why not light up that bonfire once more.

Day 5

Same procedure as the day before, but to a new location. This time north east of our camp, about 30 mins sailing away. One of the more scenic touring and skiing routes from close to 1000 m elevation.

On the way back we will take another little detour to a good redfish fishing spot, and see if we can add some redfish for the dinner.

Back at the camp you will be involved in the cooking.

As it’s the last night in the camp, we’ll make it memorable with different , and light up that bonfire for the last time.

Day 6

After a good breakfast, we will pack our gear and head for a new location in the backdrop of the camp.

We will be back in camp during the afternoon, hopefully a great experience richer, and with loads of new stories to tell back home!

Day 7

For our final day, we will have a relaxed morning at the camp, enjoying breakfast while reflecting on our adventures. After packing and tidying up, we will have the option for a leisurely ski tour in the backdrop of the camp, revisiting some of the beautiful spots we’ve seen during the trip or exploring new terrain based on group interest. This will be a more relaxed pace, allowing for plenty of time to take in the breathtaking views and capture memories. As we wrap up our journey, we will have a farewell lunch, sharing experiences and highlights from the trip before embarking on our boat ride back to Nuuk.
